يعود تاريخ بيركنستوك إلى عام 1774، حيث بدأ بتفاني صانع الأحذية يوهان آدم بيركنستوك في حرفته. وتوارثت الأجيال هذه الحرفة، بما في ذلك حفيد يوهان آدم، كونراد بيركنستوك. وقد مكّنته رؤيته الثاقبة من تطوير وبيع أحذية ذات نعال مرنة، مما أكسبه لقب مخترع النعل المرن.
